The two phones OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are two of the best smartphones with Android Marshmallow and Nougat update. Both of these phones were released back in 2016. The OnePlus 3T has been updated with Android 7 Nougat firmware. These phones are packing the Snapdragon 820 and 821 chipsets with 6GB of RAM. While many people might argue that this much RAM is just useless in a phone, they should use it. The Android experience on OnePlus 3T is certainly one of the most fluid ones ever created. It is very snappy and responsive. There is virtually no lag whatsoever. However, when it comes to daily use, even the best of phones can have several issues. When updated to Nougat, OnePlus 3T may experience some battery issues. These issues can also show up in Marshmallow in OnePlus 3.
It is important to note that the battery issues in these phones are not due to Android firmware. They are almost perfect for battery life. These issues occur due to faulty updates, some apps or OTA is the cause! Believe it or not, the OTA update can really mess up the battery life. Especially when the phone’s Android version is updated. This can make the phone lose more than 15% in under just one hour. The standby battery time is also reduced. The standby battery time is when the the phone is put into sleep mode and yet battery is getting drained. In this case, the user may lock the phone and go sleep. After 7 or 8 hours of no use at all, the phone has lost more than 30% of battery. This is because the phone is not entering the deep sleep mode.
The deep sleep mode allows phone to close all operations in background. This helps the phone to maintain battery life for longer period of time. If even a single app has malfunctioned, then the battery life of phone will keep on losing charge even when it is not being used. The deep sleep battery issue on OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is pretty common. However, there is nothing to be worried about. There is nothing wrong with the battery or Android. It is just a temporary error. The task at hand is to pin point the error that is causing this and fix it. Below are all the possible causes for bad battery life or fast draining of battery on OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3. You should give each of these a try.
This is a trial and error based method and not a confirmed-to-work kind. So make sure to check out all the possible solutions until battery on OnePlus 3/3T is fixed.
Find the Apps that are consuming battery
This is the most probable reason of all. The most likely reasons of battery drain in any phone is that some app/s is draining battery in background. Now there are two ways to confirm this theory. The first way is only to verify if this is the case or not. In this case, we are going to limit the background processes and see if it improves the battery life. This implementation is going to have a negative impact because no apps will run in background. It can make the apps crash and multitasking will not work. Therefore, this should only be used to test this theory and make sure that some background is draining battery in OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T.
- Head over to Settings > About Phone.
- Tap on the build number 7 times.
- This will show the message that you are now a developer.
- Now head back to main menu of Settings.
- Scroll down and tap on newly appeared “Developer Options”.
- In this list of settings, find the option named “Limit Background Processes”.
- Tap on it and there will be 6 options in next window.
- Select “No Background Processes”.
- Now use you phone for one day and see if this improved the battery life.
If the battery life improved..
If you have followed the steps given above and battery life got better, then some apps are consuming battery in background. Now this does not mean that some app is running 24/7 just to spy on you! If someone would want to do that, they’d make sure that you cannot notice it. Just Kidding! Going back to the main point, now that we have identified the possible cause, it is time to fix it. If there are tons of apps installed on your phone, then finding the culprit apps is going to be a little hard. You need to monitor the battery usage by each app for one whole day in normal usage. There are tons of utilities for just that. Although Android has its own battery utility, it is not as effective as it should be.
You may install following app to monitor battery usage per app for one whole day.
Checking CPU Usage
Using this app, you can check in detail which app is using how much CPU when you are not using it. System monitor will show the CPU usage over different time periods. If you have not used phone for about an hour, then the frequencies should be in Deep Sleep limit. If this is not the case, then head over to the app usage section and check which app is using CPU. This is the app that is causing the battery to drop in background. Now it is up to you if you keep this app or uninstall it.
The battery is still draining fast! What to do?
You have gone through all the steps given above but the battery is still not fixed. The battery life might have shown slight improvement but it is not as good as it should be. It means that more than one app is the cause. Now this might come as a surprise. Lets explain this! Whenever the phone receives an OTA update, the settings and several backend mechanisms are changed. This is more significant for larger firmware upgrades. In such a case, the apps that are installed already, they are transferred to new update as well. The already installed apps can become incompatible with the new version of Android. Since there is a new option for permissions, they are also carried over to the new Android version. To fix this, we have to reset the permissions for all apps once again.
- Make a backup of all data on phone including media files, messages, contacts and anything that you do not want to lose.
- Head over to settings > Backup and Reset.
- Perform a full factory reset and wipe everything from the phone.
- The phone will reboot.
- Now open apps one by one and grant the required permissions.
- The apps that you need, install them one by one from Play Store.
- After installation, open each app and grant the required permissions.
- This will make the new update fresh and better than an OTA.
- If this does not fix battery life of your OnePlus 3/3T, then you need to flash the stock firmware.
We hope that this helps people who are struggling with bad battery life on their phones. We would love you to share your experience in the comments below.
